International Bass Services

Man Recording's own yard general man, Dan Haaksman has been pushing pulverising baile funk on us for a few of years now. Consistantly pushing the funkeiros music - For that he gets big respect round here. Now Dan has been meddling with his own baile inflected riddims and drops a Miami Bass Baile electro funk screamer. When the whistling comes in I can already imagine the kids in Rio doing some crazy dance routine. This track is taken from his new Gostoso EP which is dropping on July 3rd, vinyl and digital.

We've been letting you down hard by not posting any Champeta. What The Fuck. It's summer, you need something to listen to while burning those sausages on the BBQ, swigging ale and annoying your neighbours.

Champeta is from Colombia's northern caribbean coast, cities like Barranquilla, Santa Marta and Cartagena. Like a sweet tropical cocktail of African zouk and Brazilian baile funk, which figures as much of the population of that part of Colombia is of African descent and Brazil is next door. Champeta is mostly now made on samplers and MPCs. What I like about the whole scene is that its got that an element of the JA soundsystem war. But you win, not by audio volume, but who got the hottest gear.

Who Broke my Beats?

I'm out of the bay for awhile, but the descendants still unite. DJ's Shawn Dub and Refusenik will be filling in as the weekly selectas on Thursdays at Luka's alongside Aebl Dee for a couple months. We'll still have some very special guests throughout the summer!

This week we have the one and only Be Brown of the magnificent People Party. This guy should have been born in London, but reps Atlanta, Brooklyn and now Oakland, bringing everything Funky and Soulful to a colorful Bay Area crowd on the regular. He is also my partner on The Highlife parties coming back in August.

He recently put me on to Brokiton, the Puerto Rico-London link up.

Omar Souleyman

I'm still blown away by the Omar Souleyman show. At the side of the stage were two guys, occasionally filming the gig who started dancing. I managed to film this piece of footage just as they moved onto the stage. I'm still not sure if they were actually part of the show or just fans. I also filmed a bit of 'Leh Jani'.

Descendants Diaspora Meet in Oakland

This week's Thursday at Luka's in Oakland, we're calling all South Asian Descendants to Descendants United. As our guest this week, DJ Anjali put it, "African Diaspora meets Desi Diaspora."

With a name like Gitanjali (song offering) you’d think she was born to play records… Made in India, born in Oregon & raised like a gypsy, DJ Anjali is Portland, Oregon's primary advocate (and dance missionary) for the many varied electronic sounds of the South Asian diaspora, from UK Bhangra and Bollywood to Desi beats. Well known as a dancefloor instigator she is equally confident throwing down grime, hiphop & ragga/dancehall.

Tony Allen Show

The Secousse Sound System featuring myself and A.J. Holmes are absolutely stoked to be warming up for Africa's greatest drummer, Tony Allen!!

Data Collector

This Thursday we got Juan Data guesting for Descendants United at Luka's Taproom, 2221 Broadway in Oakland.

In celebration I'm posting this dark cumbia by the man by the dam, Sonido del Principe, a remix of Night by Benga & Coki. The Geenus remix of this made its way into my Calypso mix, definitely a favorite track of mine.

A little more info on Juan Data:

Born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, DJ Juan Data was an underground journalist deeply involved in the local hip-hop scene. In 2001 moved to California and with his first paycheck bought a couple of turntables. For two years he played in many venues of Los Angeles before or in between acts during rock en español concerts. In 2003 moved to the Mission District in San Francisco and since then he has been DJing all over the city in latin and world music parties. Among his many eclectic influences are: Afrika Bambaataa, DJ Krush, Felix da Housecat, Toy Selectah, Cut Chemist, The KLF and all the 1988/1992 wave of sample-heavy hip-hop and house artists. Besides DJing he still freelances as a music journalist for several publications and may or may not have been involved in porn.

The white hot cumbia sound of the barrios continues with an exclusive live performance from Me Tarzan You Jane. Inspired after months of raiding the CDR black markets of Argentina and Bolivia, Capitol K and Secousse friend Cibelle will bring their own slice of Tropicalia Acid Cumbia to our grinding dancefloor.

Joining them, A.J. Holmes and The Hackney Empire, who absolutely destroyed it last month, and are officially the best house band in London will play their awesome Palm wine tropical bangers. On the decks as usual, The Secousse Soundsystem will rinse the Tribal skanking pressure till chuck out.

When It comes to the trancelike desert beauty of Touareg music, I don't normally associate it with speaker tearing sub-bass.

Belgium's triple threat Tupolev Sound Crash do however. Which is a good thing as they've made this dirty sahara prowler for us. Blending the incredible cyclic vocals of Touareg group Tartit with their own beats they've made this beauty which I'm listening to on a loop.

On friday, I was lucky enough to see the Sublime
Frequencies show in London. Gotta say that both bands were fucking awesome. Doueh from Group Doueh, dressed in white robes, played guitar behind his head Hendrix style. Omar Souleyman was one of the most captivating performers I've seen in ages, stalking the stage backed up by his whispering lyricist, Syrian techno keyboards and electric saz player. If you can, catch them on tour this summer. It was jaw droppingly good.

Then I caught Ghetto Bassquake pal, Gabriel Heatwave tearing it up in Brixton, dropping bombs like his ultra awesome new funky track with Busy Signal on vocals. Absolute FYA!
